London’s Cycleway network reaches 450km — a five-fold increase in a decade — after completion of new routes across the capital.

London’s Cycleway Network Reaches 450km

TfL announced the Cycleway network has grown from 90km in 2016 to 450km today — longer than the entire Tube network and further than London to Paris. The milestone follows completion of new and upgraded sections in Islington, Wandsworth, Kingston and on Lambeth Bridge, with two more cycleways expected later this year. TfL says usage continues to rise alongside the network’s growth.

Why it matters: A concrete sign that UK cycling infrastructure keeps compounding — the kind of network growth that makes ebike/cycling commuting viable for more people, directly relevant to the cycling interest.

There is investment going into this but there are also nuances to be aware of. There is in fact a cycle lane in installed in my town center. However the problem with it is that it is not continuous and when the road narrows it’s simply stops. If we compare this to Europe then there is currently a long way to go. More importantly is what about national infrastructure full stop on a recent cycling trip to Belgium I discovered nodemapp.com which covers that country France Netherlands and Germany. The UK needs a mesh network of cycle and hiking lanes to help keep the population healthy and happy.
